A Mala is a
meditative tool, which can be an aide in healing the body, mind, and
spirit through projected vibrations (Mantra) combined with the ancient
qualities of healing gemstones. There is one extra bead at the end of
the strand, which is the Guru Bead (making a total of 109 beads on a
strand). Although a Mala can have 108, 54, 27, or 9 beads. Guru means ‘from darkness to light’, which could symbolize your inner teacher.
108 has been a sacred number for a very long time and is a reference
frame that just so happens to have some crazy synchronicities
throughout various religions, cultures, the planet, and even our
breath. Using the number 108 helps us coordinate the rhythm of time and
space and keeps us in harmony with the spiritual powers of nature. This
number’s significance is found in many different aspects of life. To
name just a few:
*The diameter of the sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth.
*In the Sanskrit alphabet, there are 54 letters. Each has masculine and feminine (shiva and shakti).
54x2=108.
*The chakras are the intersections of energy lines, and
there are said to be a total of 108 energy lines converging to form the
heart chakra.
*In one minute, we breathe approximately 15 times, in 1 hour 900 times, in 12 hours 10800 times,
in a full day 10800 x 2.
*Broken apart: 1 stands for God or higher Truth, 0 stands for emptiness
or completeness in spiritual practice, and 8 stands for
infinity or eternity.
It is very important to treat your mala with gentleness and respect.
It is sacred and they can be fragile. It rests on the inside edge of
your finger over a meridian point of a specifically chosen finger. You
hold the Mala generally on the left hand but we have found some
contradictions to this. Use your intuition on which hand you use or do
further research and decide which resonates with your intention most.
As far as which finger you choose, again, it depends on your
intention. here is some information about the significance of each
finger:
*The Index finger relates to wisdom, knowledge and prosperity
*The middle finger enhances patience
*The ring finger builds the nervous system and promotes health and vitality
*The little finger works with communication skills and intelligence
Start with the bead next to the Guru bead and draw the beads towards
you touching one bead at a time with your thumb while repeating your
Mantra either silently, in a whisper, or out loud. How you say your
Mantra, and what your intention is while you say it is very important,
such as the rhythm, tone or melody. If you rush or skim over your
words, it matters. If you are new to Mantra, you could use an affirmation such as "I deeply love and accept myself" or "I am peaceful and calm". There
are also more traditional ones such as ‘Om Namah Shivaya’, which can be
interpreted as “I honor the divine within me, my heart, my true self,
my inner teacher”. When you are finished, you may reflect on your
Guru bead and express your most heartfelt projection or you could start
over by flipping the strand 180 degrees and go back the way you came.
Don’t pass over the Guru Bead because that would be like symbolically
stepping over your teacher, and that’s no good.
To clear the energy of your Mala, whether it was treated carelessly,
used by another person, or simply in need of a boost, put the beads in
the freezer for a few hours or put them on a speaker and play some
Kirtan (devotional chanting) or classical music. You can also spin
them in cystal singing bowls.
We have a beautiful and powerful selection of Mala's available on our

energy in… like a plant.
Of course, not all Malas are created equal.
The stone and the quality of the stone bring about different effects
for different people. We make customized Mala's and often add
significant charms or heirlooms to the piece, if available and
appropriate. Mindful and Embodied Mala's are carefully handmade by either Sam Mercado, Natalie Buchi Mercado, or Brandy Miller. For more information on each of them, please click their name.
