Styles of Yoga
Ashtanga Vinyasa

A method which uses a set series of poses and focuses on Drishti (Focus), Asana (Postures), Pranayama (Breath), and Vinyasa (linking postures together through breath and movement) to produce intense internal heat and purifying sweat.  Function of the postures is emphasized more than form with the intention of cleansing and strengthening the body, calming the mind, and becoming aware of the ability we have to keep our gaze inward.  Self discovery & creation are a direct result.  One begins to connect with their Inner Guru vs. their Inner Critic.

Anusara

In Sanskrit, Anusara means “to be in the flow”, “flowing with Grace”, “following your heart”.  This is a Tantric based system that uses the philosophy of Intrinsic Goodness and combines attention to Alignment with awareness of energy flow in the body.  Specific tools and techniques we use include the 3 A’s (Attitude, Alignment, Action) and the Universal Principals of Alignment (Open to Grace, muscular energy, expanding spiral, contracting spiral, organic energy).  We call upon this style of yoga to find alignment in postures by correctly placing the bones and muscles in the joints, and also in reconnecting with source energy and divine potential.

Kundalini

It is said that Kundalini is the Yoga of Awareness.  It is an Energetic style of Yoga with focus on Kriyas, or sequences designed for a specific purpose.  This Yoga will push you beyond what you think your limits are by using repetitive movements, chanting and meditation.  It is highly energizing.  This practice balances the glandular system, builds tremendous strength to the nervous system, and enables one to harness the energy of the mind and the emotions.

Forest Yoga

Forest Yoga is unique and powerful both in the philosophy and also in the approach towards Yoga.  This style of yoga uses intense pose sequences, deep breathing, and awareness to get the practitioner deeply connected and able to bring aliveness to every part of the body.  It is very healing – both physically and emotionally.

Power Yoga

An adaptation of Ashtanga Yoga, this practice is one of the most physically challenging and brings about a sense of empowerment and strength.  It is designed to assist practitioners to tap into their innate physical and spiritual potential.  It is dynamic, flowing and rigorous.  The use of breath, Bandhas (locks), postural sequencing, and the 8 limbs of Yoga all compliment this practice and bring a sense of strength and openness to the practioner.  This style of Yoga will assist one in reaching new levels of fitness and health, in more deeply understanding physical and emotional suffering, as well as awaken hidden strength and inner beauty.

Restorative

A gentle style of Yoga that focuses on calming the body and mind through slow, gentle movements and Pranayama (breathwork).  It is common to use props during Restorative Yoga which can be beneficial for modifying traditional Hatha Yoga postures.  This style of Yoga is incredibly healing and relaxing to the nervous system and quite useful under stressful circumstances.  It is extemely beneficial to practice when the body is fatigued, injured, or recovering from an illness.

Yoga Nidra

In Sanskrit the word ‘nidra’ means ‘sleep’.  Yoga Nidra is a technique in which the practitioner learns to relax consciously through guided meditation.  The practice induces complete physical, mental, and emotional relaxation.  During the practice, a Sankalpa or Resolve is made giving the practitioner an opportunity to be the creator of something they need or want.  While manifestation is a wonderful part of the practice, one might also experience a purging of karmic experiences, a deep sense of relaxation and restoration, as well as gain a tool in learning to train the mind.
